CUNY Internationalist Marxist Club Activity Report and Budget—Spring 2021

Submitted by Anonymous on 29 September 2022

The events listed above are some ways that we were able to remain active during the Spring semester, despite the continued challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic. We found many ways to bring our revolutionary Marxist outlook and program to CUNY students, adjuncts and others through our participation in protests, workers struggles, and online forums. Recent political events in the United States and internationally continue to expose the barbarism of capitalism and highlight the urgency of international socialist revolution. If you would like to find out more about our activities, please write us at cunyinternationalists@gmail.com.

Constitution of the CUNY Internationalist Marxist Club Article I: The name of the chartered organization shall be the CUNY Internationalist Marxist Club. Article II: Its purpose is to promote Marxist education, solidarity with the world-wide struggle for emancipation of the workers and oppressed, and awareness of the connection between these issues and the struggle to defend public education, in accordance with the Trotskyist principles of “The Internationalist.” (See Statement of Purpose for more details.) The organization’s activities will include discussions, forums, film screenings and readings. An area of particular focus will be the theory and practice of Marxist pedagogy and its relationship to the ongoing struggles to defend public education in the United States and across the world. We will seek to understand what the mechanics of such an approach to pedagogy means in terms of its actualization in our studies and teaching across CUNY. Article III: All Graduate Center students are eligible for membership. A member is one who has necessarily signed the last membership roster available. If the rosters have been made available during the current semester, then a member is one who has signed that roster. If rosters have not been made available during the current semester, then a member is one who signed the roster from the previous semester. Article IV: The organization shall have a coordinator, who will be responsible for convening meetings and representing the organization. It shall also have a treasurer, responsible for maintaining its finances. If the members so choose in a given school year, it may also have an assistant coordinator, responsible for assisting in the coordinator’s duties. Any active member may nominate any other active member for one of these offices at a meeting held for the purpose of elections. Elections will be held during the second week of the fall and spring semester. Elections shall be by majority vote of those present at the meeting. They may be by secret ballot or open ballot, as decided by those present. Article V: Committees may be created as needed, by majority vote at any meeting. Article VI: The organization will seek to meet at least twice a month. Special meetings may be called by the coordinator as needed. Meetings will include: organized discussion groups, forums on specific topics (such as the politics of education reform and its Marxist critique) and film showings. All events are open to all Graduate Center students as well as to anyone from the public who wishes to attend. Article VII: A quorum shall consist of one third of active members (i.e., members who have attended two or more meetings in the prior two months). Article VIII: Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any active member, and may be approved by majority vote at a meeting of the organization. Description: The purpose of the organization is to promote Marxist education and solidarity with the world-wide struggle for emancipation of the workers and oppressed, connecting these issues to the struggle to defend public higher education.
