MISSION: The GC Immigration Working Group is an interdisciplinary discussion group at the CUNY Graduate Center. We invite students and faculty from all departments to share interests, ideas, and information about issues related to the study, research, and analysis of issues related to immigration. Our primary purpose is to foster an intellectual and social community of scholars that encourages interactions across disciplines and between faculty and students.
EVENTS: The groups’ monthly meetings feature talks by invited researchers, presentations of students’ work, and general discussions that address various aspects of current immigration research. It also acts as a support network for new and old graduate students. In addition to these meetings, we also hope to organize a small conference of immigration scholars. Each event also has a social component; they offer the opportunity for those working in various disciplines to come together, network, and lay the groundwork for future collaborative work.
MEMBERSHIP: We are open to all Graduate Center students and welcome participation from other CUNY faculty and students, as well as those from other institutions. We maintain a listserv of over 80 members; our active participants have included students in Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Social Psychology, and several other disciplines. Co-Chairs: Traditionally, every two years, two students who are either selected or who volunteer have run the group. There are no formal elections. The Co-Chairs share the responsibilities of scheduling and running weekly meetings, organizing events, and applying for funding.
