Inspired by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, late Distinguished Professor of English at the Graduate Center, queer theorist, and fiber artist, the purpose of Text Textile Texture Studio 3Text Studio) is to help GC students and other academics practice crafts that are loosely connected to books, texts, or language, as well as studying theoretical and artistic work related to the materiality of language. No experience or special skills are needed to do planned 3Text activities, which may be of interest to students across a very broad range of disciplines. Mission: The 3Text Studio is an interdisciplinary guild dedicated to enabling art-making in the tradition of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and other craftspeople motivated by textual interests. Its purpose is practicing such crafts in text, textile, and various studio arts, as well as studying theoretical and artistic work on the materiality of language. Events and Activities: Possible 3Text Studio events include practicum sessions for making artists books, rubber-stamping blank calendars, paper-folding, making comic books, imprinting paper or textiles, or use of special materials such as light-sensitive dyes; and workshops for group writing, experimental critical writing, and other explorations of text production. More familiar events such as presentations and discussion may also be arranged. Events are open to Graduate Center students, who may also bring a guest, Graduate Center faculty and staff-members, as well as doctoral students from other institutions. No special skills or experience are required to fully participate in T3S events. Membership: Members may include current and former Graduate Center students and anyone who has attended a 3Text Studio event. Only current matriculated students of the Graduate Center may be voting members. Governance: 3Text Studio governance is by voting members, led and facilitated by Chairs. Event-planning and administration will be done at meetings, which need not be face-to-face. Meetings will be facilitated by at least one Chair. Only matriculated Graduate Center students with an interest in the mission of the organization are eligible to serve as 3Text Studio Chairs. The role of 3Text Chair may be assumed by one, two, or more people at a time. Any member may nominate a Chair, including self-nomination, which is encouraged. Chairs may be added at any time and there are no scheduled elections or nomination deadlines. New Chairs are not voted on by the entire membership, but will be instated if they are approved by at least half of current Chairs, in order to promote harmony among the Chairs. If, for some reason, agreement cannot be reached on a question or proposition, current Chairs will conclude decisions by majority vote. In case of a tie, the default resolution will be no action.
