The need of a Chartered Group oriented to promote study of Mexico and all issues related to Mexico is a significant project within The Graduate Center for several reasons. The existence of other chartered organizations, such as the Colombian Studies Group, inspired us on the necessity to look towards Mexico, the closest US Latin American neighbor. Mexico is a primordial geopolitical and cultural reference in the United States and this is shown by the amount of different studies related to the area that proliferate in North American academic literature; where CUNY’s and the Graduate Center’s academic production are no exception. In relation to this, we became aware of the fact that a Mexican Studies Group would bring together a great number of students that belong to different programs at the Graduate Center, students who are already working on topics related to Mexico, but are doing so without interacting with students from other programs. A Chartered Group dedicated to Mexican Studies in the Graduate Center will, without doubt, work as both the response to a necessity that already exists and as the starting point to a future of new interdisciplinary research related to Mexico.
